Wanting to get into model railways and getting stuck at the door is extremely common — there is a wall of jargon and an intimidating number of choices. The good news is that the entry requirements are much smaller than they look. What "N scale" means: gauge and scale are two different things
The term bundles together two facts that beginners often merge into one.
- Gauge — 9 mm. The distance between the two rails. Standard N scale uses 9 mm, which is where the "N" comes from (nine).
- Scale — how much smaller than reality. Japanese-prototype stock is generally 1:150; Shinkansen models are 1:160. KATO also produces Taiwan High Speed Rail and some non-Japanese prototypes at 1:160.
That is enough to start. The important consequence: "they're both N scale" only guarantees the gauge matches. It says nothing about whether curve radii, turnouts, couplers or platforms are interchangeable — which is why the compatibility checks later on matter.
What it takes to run a loop
KATO describes three elements — rolling stock, track, controller. TOMIX lists track, a motorised vehicle, a controller, and the DC feeder that connects the two. The least confusing way to remember it is three systems plus the power connection:
1. A train with a motor
You need at least one powered car. Add-on sets often contain only unpowered trailers — look for a motor or "M" designation in the contents before buying.
2. Enough track for a loop
An oval is the simplest day-one layout. KATO's UNITRACK and TOMIX's FineTrack both have the roadbed moulded on, so sections click together and run as-is.
3. A controller
A knob that sets speed and direction. The basic unit supplied in a starter set is entirely sufficient to begin with.
4. A feeder and power supply
The feeder carries power from the controller into the rails. Check separately whether the AC adapter the controller needs is included in the box.
Your first box: does it contain a train?
This is the single most common way a first purchase goes wrong. Plenty of products marketed as "entry level" contain no rolling stock at all.

Be careful with unusually cheap "M1", "My Plan" or add-on set listings — they are cheap because there is no train in them. Five checks that stop a wrong order
Search results tend to flatten this into "N scale all works together". It does not. 9 mm answers the gauge question and nothing else — not power, not curves, not connector types, not platform clearance. Put the product page, the box and the instruction sheet side by side and clear these five in order. If you cannot find evidence for one, ask the manufacturer or the retailer rather than guessing.

This is also why a first loop is easier if the track, feeder and controller all come from the same maker — one less layer of variables. Whether a train can cross brands is still a per-model question about radius and clearance. KATO or TOMIX? Just pick the track system
You do not need to decide which brand is better overall — no such answer exists. Look at the trains you know you want, the radius your table can hold, and whether your eventual plan needs a particular turnout or track arrangement. Then choose the system that matches.
Rolling stock from both makers will generally run on either system's 9 mm track, but that does not automatically make rail joints, feeders and controller connections compatible. Space and radius: choose the train first
Minimum radius is not a shared N scale constant. Long vehicles — Shinkansen sets, large locomotives — need larger curves; short vehicles can take very tight ones. So the order is always: decide the train, look up the minimum radius on its product page or box, then choose from the curves your table can hold.
For a sense of scale: TOMIX's Pattern A oval is roughly 1,120 × 560 mm (about 44 × 22 in), so a large desk or a modest patch of floor is enough for a first loop. Do not treat that as your table size, though — add margin for body overhang on curves, the roadbed edge, and enough clearance that nothing rolls off. Estimating a budget without being misled
Starter set contents, controllers and street prices all move, so a price range quoted without a date and a part number is worse than useless. Instead: fix on one complete part number, and on the same day record two totals — (1) the landed cost of the starter set that includes a train, and (2) the combined cost of buying the same content separately: rolling stock, track set, controller, the specified power supply and the feeder.
Then list shipping, any agent fees, payment exchange spread and cross-border return costs separately. Only at that point are you comparing the same thing. Buying locally lets you confirm the box condition and gives you somewhere to go for support; buying from overseas may be cheaper or may not, once everything is counted. Whatever route you take, skip any cheap listing that will not show you a complete part number, a contents list and its return terms.
Once it runs: where the next money should go
Run several slow laps in both directions before buying anything else. If it stutters or stalls, deal with the railhead, the wheels and the joints first. If it catches on curves or beside a platform, fix the radius and the clearance. Day one: seven steps to a safe first power-up
- Inventory the box. Against the instruction sheet, find the powered car, the track, the feeder, the controller, the adapter and the rerailer.
- Join the track on a flat surface. Keep sections level and aligned, and make sure both joiners seat fully. Never twist sections apart vertically.
- Do not plug in yet. Leave the controller at STOP / off, and connect the feeder to the designated track section and to the controller.
- Place the train with the rerailer. On a straight section, get every wheelset fully onto both rails. Do not press down on the flanges with your fingers.
- Confirm you have a powered car. Trailers alone will not move. Test with the shortest formation that can actually run.
- Start slowly. Power up and increase speed gradually — straights and curves first, then test both directions.
- Stop immediately if anything is off. Derailment, a protection trip, any smell, heat or unusual noise: back to STOP, power off, then investigate.
Take your time. How long a first build takes depends on how many track sections you have and how familiar you are — there is no "should take X minutes". Checking that joiners and wheels are properly seated is far safer than forcing anything, opening the throttle hard, or repeatedly repositioning stock while the power is on.
Five safety rules for analog DC
Most starter sets are analog DC: the controller varies the voltage and polarity fed to the rails. These five rules cover it:
- Use only the adapter and wiring method the controller specifies. Never substitute another supply just because the plug fits.
- Return to STOP and switch off before wiring, placing stock, retrieving a derailment or cleaning.
- Never connect two controllers to the same powered section of track.
- If a protection light comes on, the controller trips, or a lead feels hot — disconnect and investigate rather than switching it back on repeatedly.
- Shut down, unplug and store per the instructions. Observe the age marking on the box; children should be supervised.
